Poetry according to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia is a form of literary art in which language is used for its aesthetic and evocative qualities in addition to, or in lieu of, its apparent meaning. Poetry appeals to people across cultures and ages - from childhood to adulthood. Babies enjoy a variety of literary experiences. Poetry, in addition to nursery rhymes, adds beautiful rhythmical language to the lessons. There are many types of poems we can share our babies.
As a parent, you can read to your baby a poem of your favorite poet or one of your own making - anybody can be a poet in his own right. Through this, you can have the joy of rediscovering the beauty of poetry with your child. Poems put to music like Ted Jacobs’ CD “Child’s Garden of Songs” with poems from Robert Louis Stevenson’s “A Child’s Garden of Verses” are beautiful.
Learning through music enhances every learning experience for both the baby and his parent. Exposing the baby at early age to poetry can be a priceless present you can give your cute angel. Cultivating the habit of poetry reading with your child as he grows older will be a treasure he can keep throughout his life. And mind you, this will cost you a few bucks - an incomparable investment you can build on your child.
Discussing about poetry brings to memory my childhood days when my auntie would lovingly recite to me “All Things Bright and Beautiful”. I came to learn only at grade school the writer’s name Cecil Frances Alexander. With inspiration from my late auntie, I am sharing with you this poem, and it goes:
ALL THINGS BRIGHT AND BEAUTIFUL
All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful,
The Lord God made them all.
Each little flower that opens,
Each little bird that sings,
He made their glowing colors,
He made their tiny wings.
The purple-headed mountain,
The river running by,
All sunset, and the morning,
That brightens up the sky;
The cold wind in the winter,
The pleasant summer rain,
The ripe fruits in the garden,
He made them everyone.
He gave us eyes to see them,
And lips that we might tell,
How great is God almighty,
Who has made all things well.
Or you may consider reading to your baby another classical poem by Ann Taylor:
THE BABY’S DANCE
Dance, little baby, dance up high,
Never mind baby, mother is by;
Crow and caper, caper and crow,
There little baby, there you go:
Up to the ceiling, down to the ground,
Backwards and forwards, round and round.
Then dance, little baby, and mother shall sing,
With the merry gay coral, ding, ding, a-ding, ding.
Perhaps, from the seed of my literary experience at early age sprung my desire to write poems, human interest stories, to read books which touch on the chords of human true-to-life experiences, and to devote myself to a profession that cares for people on their health needs. All these came from the nurturing experiences my family particularly my parents provided me. I truly value the gift I received in my childhood days.
